Cassie fidgeted with the bright red velour suit she had chosen to wear to the children’s Christmas pageant, tugging the tunic down as she admired its clean straight lines. She peered at herself in the floor-length mirror and wondered if it wasn’t a little too showy, a bit too bright.

After all, the children were the feature attraction this evening she told herself severely, as she brushed her glossy curls into some semblance of order. And just because she wanted to attract one man’s attention in particular didn’t mean she had to spoil the evening for them.

“Well, he can hardly miss me in this outfit.” She chuck led and turned away to put on the shiny gold star earrings and matching star brooch. “And red is my favorite color.”

She cast one more doubtful look at her image and shrugged. For better or for worse, she had promised. Well, tonight was definitely going to be for the better. She was adamant on that.

“Wow!” Marie flashed her huge shy grin as she stood in the doorway. “You look great.”

“Thank you, my dear.” Cassie curtsied, taking care not to overbalance on her new black patent heels-three-anda-half-inch heels. She would have worn higher ones, but she had enough trouble staying upright on these. “You look pretty hot yourself.”

Marie’s straight blond hair gleamed brightly against the black velvet jacket and lace-edged white blouse. In her matching slim-cut pants, she looked exactly what she was. A beautiful young teenage girl.

“It’s not too much is it, Cassie? I’m supposed to meet Nate after the service. We’re going to exchange gifts and I wanted to look special.”

Cassie hugged the tall slim girl against her and brushed a kiss against her head.

“You are special, Marie. You’re a very beautiful daughter.”

Marie flushed with pleasure, her eyes downcast.

“Not quite yet,” she whispered hopefully, her tone eagerly wishful.

“The papers don’t say it,” Cassie agreed, tipping the girl’s chin up to stare straight into her eyes. “But I do. And no judge in any court could make it more official than it feels right here.” She tapped a finger against her heart. “Okay?”

Marie nodded, grinning from ear to ear. “Okay.”

“Don’t spend too long saying goodbye to Nate. He’ll be back in a week, remember.” Cassie fluffed her black locks once more and then picked up her small beaded bag. “And we have carolers coming around afterward.”

“I know,” Marie agreed softly. “I’ll be here to help.”

Cassie frowned. “I don’t want you to be there to help, Marie. I want you to be here as part of our family as we welcome people into our home.” She grinned. “You’ve done more than enough helping lately.”

Marie smiled back, taking no offense at the words. “Well, you have to admit that I’m better at baby-sitting than I am at wrapping oddly shaped gifts.”

Cassie rolled her eyes in agreement. “I’ll say.”

They walked down the staircase giggling like young girls as they joked back and forth. Jeff stood waiting at the bottom, little Stevie cradled happily in his arms and Jonathan standing beside him.
